carfit driving safety program for aging adults
Our goal at The Miller Elder Law Firm is to provide resources for aging adults, not only legal information, but also quality of life issues to help this population lead healthy lives.

Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their seat belts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.

CarFit is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American Automobile Association), AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

The program is designed to help older drivers find out how well they currently fit their personal vehicle and ways to improve their fit.  A proper fit in one’s personal vehicle can greatly increase not only the driver’s safety but also the safety of others.  CarFit also promotes conversations about adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills.

At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.  There are CarFit events around the country.  The Senior Recreation Center in Gainesville hosted an event earlier this month.  Go to carfit.org for upcoming events.

Thank you for sharing this information with your loved ones who may benefit from a driver safety program.  Together we can make a difference in the lives of our aging adults.
